La Fiorentina ha esordito in Serie A, la massima divisione del calcio italiano, nella stagione 1931-1932, contro il Milan. Prima di quel periodo, la squadra aveva già ottenuto successi significativi nelle categorie inferiori del calcio italiano. Tuttavia, è nel campionato 1931-1932 che la Fiorentina ha ottenuto la promozione in Serie A, debuttando così nella massima serie del calcio italiano.
Il 20 settembre 1931 la Fiorentina disputò la sua prima partita nel campionato di Serie A proprio a San Siro contro il Milan. Per i viola questa è una data particolarmente significativa perché, sempre il 20 settembre, questa volta del 1926, la Fiorentina giocò la sua prima partita in qualità di società calcistica neonata. All’epoca i giocatori vestivano la maglia rossa, mentre il caratteristico colore viola arrivò solamente nel 1929. Infine il 20 settembre 1987 la Fiorentina sconfisse il Milan che giocava in casa, per 2 reti a 0 di cui una firmata dal grande Roberto Baggio.

Nella sua partita d’esordio in Serie A la Fiorentina del marchese Ridolfi, esponente di una delle più antiche casate nobiliari di Firenze, Presidente della FIGC nel 1942 e membro del CONI per più di vent’anni, dimostrò di essere all’altezza del Milan di Benazzoli. La partita finì infatti in parità, con la rete dell’attaccante viola Gastone Prendato e per i rossoneri con quella di Mario Magnozzi, attaccante livornese soprannominato “motorino“, perché instancabile e sempre presente in ogni zona del campo.
Ironia della sorte, le squadre conclusero la stagione piazzandosi entrambe al quarto posto. All’epoca, infatti, esisteva il “pari merito“.
